“social relief grant SRD grant was introduced in May 2020 as a temporary measure to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable, who were affected by [COVID-19 induced] lockdown measures. It has been extended several times since then. Discussions on the future of the grant are ongoing and involve very difficult trade-offs and financing decisions,” he said.

Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu has indicated that she now intends to raise the means test for this round of the grant to R624. This is the food poverty level, or the amount of monthly income needed by an individual to sustain themselves. Zulu published draft regulations in the government gazette last week.
