The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) administers the Child Support Grant (CSG), which is a social grant for low-income families to help with the costs of their child's essential requirements. Anyone under the age of 18 is considered a "child" in this circumstance.
In an effort to benefit this cohort of grant recipients, the Department of Social Development has recently implemented measures that will further increase the amount that is usually paid out for this grant.
, caregivers who are eligible can now apply for
the CSG top-up at their local SASSA office or online at= services.sassa.gov.za.
The CSG top-up has been introduced to assist relatives caring for
orphans to provide for their basic needs. The purpose is to keep
orphans within their extended family environment without removing
them from familiar households.
How to apply for a top up
To qualify, applicants must prove that a child is an orphan by
providing the following:
certified copies of the death certificates of the child’s parents,
or
where the death certificate of one of the parents cannot be
obtained by the applicant, a certified copy of the death
certificate of one parent and an affidavit by the applicant
attesting to the unknown status of the child’s other parent.
